Thanks to all of the parents who helped with the book fair. It was a big success and our sales were great. It takes a lot of people to set up, run, and break down. We 27 adult helpers and several kids. A big thanks to Vicki Vermillion who called everyone and set up the schedule. Thanks to Barry Steinkruger, Jackie Tucker,Jenny Ditto, Sharon Haymes, and Heidi Harris for helping set up. Another big thanks to Mary, Soliel, and Hannah Polston, Trinity Kingsford and Melissa Roberts, others who just popped in to help. We really appreciate all you’ve done. It will also be fun to see the new books purchased for our library from the book fair profits. Please stop by and have a look.

Books will be delivered on Thursday and that is when the fun begins! Books come disorganized and we need to unpack, sort, and set up on tables in “like groups.” Also, it is always fun to see what is sent and get that first look. Times we need helpers are: Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Friday any time from 8:30 to 3:00. Please call 742-8711 or e-mail charvat-drew_audrey@asdk12.org to volunteer.
Thanks!

Thanks to Costco on Dimond for their generous donation of pizza for our Battle of the Books (BOB) award celebration this past Friday. Costco provided pizza for 25 BOB participants, coaches, and parents. Everyone had a great time and it was nice to talk about BOB this year and plan for next year.

Our Battle of the Books teams worked very hard this year and given the new school schedule; they did a great job. Their super sportsmanship and how they conducted themselves should be commended! Everyone seemed to really have fun at the events and many are planning next year alreadyJ. The outgoing H.S. team was very happy with their showing and came back happy after a long day of battling.
Our participants were:
Team #37, 3rd/4th graders: Joey Aist, Cassidy Burke, and Liza Vuckovich
Team #38, 3rd/4th graders: Ryan Terry, Ciara Brady, and Mary Lil Ambler
Team #40, 5th/6th graders: Alisa Aist, Aurora Newkirk, and Grace Denney
Team #41, 5th/6th graders: Zoe Harris and Valyn LaMothe
M.S. Team: Matthew Newkirk and Sam Ramirez
H.S. Team: Jonathon Weinfurter, Nikki Navio, Sam Friedman, and Allison Ducker
I should also mention that Battle of the Books was done on a smaller scale with the K/1s and everyone was a winner. They really enjoyed it! The 2/3 were given a small demonstration about Battle of the Books, however, with 3rd grade being the time to decide to do it formally, I left it to the students. Second graders were encouraged to join next year.
Our parent coaches this year were wonderful and without them we would not have been able to have practiced as much we did! I would really like to thank Donna Newkirk, Jen Aist, Nancy Burke, Jennifer Adler, and Brenda Theyers. They were very dedicated and did all they could to help our teams prepare and get to their city battles. Thanks for all your help!!!

Please congratulate Jonathon Weinfurter, Nikki Navio, Sam Friedman, and Allison Ducker for a job well done! There were 11 teams participating today at Service High in the Anchorage H.S. Battle of the Books competition. The questions were tough and our team did an outstanding job. It should be noted that with the new school schedule and intensives our team did not have a great deal of time to prepare. However, they really came together, worked hard and it showed!

The book fair will be set up next week on Monday and Tuesday for preview. Please stop by to see what we have! On Tuesday, right after school, students may “preshop” and we will hold what they would like to purchase. Sales officially begin on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 7th & 8th. We will be open from 8-6 on Wed. and 8-4 on Thurs.
Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Any student in grades 3-12 who is interested in Battle of the Books should come to the library for a short meeting at 12:00, tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 26th. We will sign up, receive materials, permission slips that need to be returned, and meet each other. Battle volunteers are invited too!
Thanks to all who have volunteered so far!!!! It is wonderful that so many of you have signed up. However, we do have some critical time slots still open and we need at least one person to help with sales during these times. The time commitment is for a two hour block on either Nov. 7th or 8th. Please call 742-8711 or 8708 or e-mail at charvat-drew_audrey@asdk12.org to sign up.
Again, thanks for helping make this a fun and successful event!
