As part of making Parent Forum accessible to as many parents as possible we always provide both food and childcare. Normally I have the job of hanging out with the kids and watching movies while other parents discuss the critical business of the school. (See, volunteering can be fun!)
Unfortunately I’ve had an ongoing conflict with another board meeting that has been keeping me from the much more entertaining duty of showing movies to the kids during Parent Forum — and this month is also a challenge. So I’m looking for a parent who is willing to help out the school by showing a movie from 6:30 – 8:00 PM on Tuesday night. Can you help? If so please call me at 907-727-9397 (my mobile number) or email me at glw907 AT gmail DOT com for all the details. This is a great way to help Polaris, and beside that it’s a heck of a lot of fun!

The Environmental Club which meets every Thursday in Kathryn’s room during lunch has a guest speaker from the Anchorage School District coming this Thursday. John Paxton will be here to discuss building energy use that is tracked by the district and ideas for saving energy.
We are purchasing pizza so that students who are genuinely interested learning about current energy use at Polaris and developing a plan for reducing energy use at Polaris can come right after advisory 11:45 and they won’t have to stand in line for lunch.
We are hoping to see some new faces at the Environmental club – we have three functioning committees:
- Horticulture who propagate plants, grow them and will sell them in May.,
- Recycling who help run the Monday recycling and do outreach information to the school community. This group is hoping to do a waste audit this spring so students interested in helping are very welcome, and
- Energy committee that is looking at the energy use in the building and
developing an action plan for reducing use here at Polaris. They will have an outreach plan to implement next year and we have submitted a proposal to be considered for a wind turbine at the building.

Parent Forum Nights are becoming worth your time. Now we need you.
The discussions of Parent Forum are now about how your Children LEARN at Polaris and how you can continue that learning at home and in the rest of their lives.
- In October we discussed technology and learning.
- In November we discussed Seminar Learning.
- In December we discussed how our children learn to write.
- All three nights we had at least seven teachers and staff to answer our questions and provide ideas.
On Tuesday, February 2, 6:30 to 8:00 pm we will be discussing Technology Safety.
The learning at Polaris is generally different than how we learned things as students. When you learn how and when to communicate with your student about their school, it has many benefits to your student and your family.
Our elementary and secondary tech teachers Corey Aist And Siri Khalsa will be giving a presentation to the parents. These teachers are giving us their evenings to help us help our kids learn. Please come to take advantage of what they have to offer us.
We will be showing the movie Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs for the kids. Our timing is good, we do end at 8pm. Please note that these meetings are for the teachers to share how they teach our children. For questions, please call Barry Steinkruger at 441-2526 or email bvea@alaska.net
